Surely that teacher/professor had to give some kind of clarification of what "General Purpose" means...

One s/w would have to be MS Office.

Word processor
Graphic presentations (Powerpoint)
Spread sheets (Excel)
Email (Outlook)

How about a CD burning s/w such as Nero?

Backs up your files for safety
Make music cds
Make video cds
Copy cd to cd
Image your system for quick restoration

Another suggestion maybe Norton Anti-virus, pretty popular and useful, used to protect PCs from viruses, scan incoming and outgoing e-mails...

if you want to get really general purpose, you can talk about windows and/or linux.

Send a message via MSN to doctorgonzo
M$ Office
M$ Works
Corel Suite
Mozilla (browser, e-mail, newsgroups, chat)
Norton System Works

Just ask yourself what programs you use a lot?
