flashget, getright, and gozilla all seem to work well enough.
I currently use flashget, three reasons I use it.
1) It has the option to download all files on a webpage, or just certain filetypes simply by right clicking on the page then selecting what files you want to download.
2) You can process a web page for files on it that cannot be right clicked and saved. Such as *.swf files.
3) I can download 8 files simultainously with each file split into 10 pieces. This often vastly speeds up big downloads.

And flashget does not seem to have any adware.
Just go to tucows.com or download.com and browse what download managers they currently have.

If you are on Dial-up, one of these programs won't make any difference. If you are on Cable or DSL and depending on the file you are downloadings location they can speed it up. Download Accellerator works by contacting multiple servers for the file and downloading different packets from each.
If you are on dial-up programs like getright will help in that they track the packets andif the connection is lost will resume it.

I've used Getitright. It was hand for pausing and resuming downloads for dial-up.

Of the bunch around, I have been using Star Downloader www.stardownloader.com
It's free, has all the features of the others, with less of the hassles.
