QuickTime is evil adware!

Just a warning: don't install the quicktime plugin for IE(or other browsers) on your PC unless you plan on installing their crappy quicktime media player software also! If you don't install the QuickTime Media Player junk (which might I add is one of the worst media players for windows ever), you'll have a nice little QuickTime ad in your system tray. I had to delete like 3 files and 4-5 registry keys just to get rid of it since there was no uninstall program. evil is the way apple decided to advertize their junky software.

What version?

Can't say that I've had a problem with any version of quicktime up through version 6

i suppose the newest one whatever that is...but if you don't install the player then they'll try to advertize it to you until you do (if you load the QT IE plugin). just seems crooked to me.

I have the latest version, 6.3 and I unchecked the "Place Icon in System Tray" under "Preferences" and I get no ads ,in fact I don't even know it's there untill I need it.

thats because you have the software installed

i chose to install the plugin, but not the software (it didn't tell me i needed to download the software until after the plugin was installed). so everytime i rebooted the icon would come back, but there was no way to stop it except to do it manually thru the registry.

Try installing the whole program. (not 6.3, you have to pay for that. Version 6 is free)

Just because it's there, doesn't mean you have to use it for playing music. It's a general purpose player that is commonly used for commonly used formats.

If you REALLY don't want it, (if you are running XP, ME, or 98SE), go Start > Run > type "msconfig" > "Startup" tab > uncheck anything that references quicktime.

i know all about file associations but thanx. problem is already taken care of. just warning people to not install the QT IE plugin unless they plan on installing the QT software too, which is basically useless considering WMP plays all the same formats.

No real point in having the plugin without the software to play the clips though is it?.. Kind of useless really. Be like having the WMP .dll's without WMP.

...and it's also small enough so that there would be no reason not to install it.

QT is a file-association stealer, a memory hog, etc...even on a cutting edge computer it's the same. it's a poorly coded program.

If you guys thnk quicktime is bad, I have two words for you; real and player. Oh my god I hate them. They need to die a slow horrible death from overexposure to adware and spyware and watching the crappy compression used for their proprietary formats. Anway...Antichrist=real At least quicktime compression is good and pretty looking. I still prefer divx though.

Work for Apple? No. It just so happens that one of their cross-platorm products is decent.

Btw, I have quicktime installed on about 250 computers at work (98SE & 2k workstations), and they are all running quicktime fine.

Only thing worse than QT is possibly RealPlayer, and the only possible thing worse than RP is RealJukebox!
All 3 should be relegated to the ranks of abandonware.

I know the earlier versions of QT were pretty good but as time goes on they add all kinds of usless stuff to them , I won't even download it if I had to anymore.

it's similar to realplayer man talk about a blotted media player

I still got an older version 8 I think now they got realone player and it's blotted more then the ealier versions

I know this post really isnt tread topic related but I just had to vent
