Problem with .avi video

I recently downloaded a very large .avi video from KaZaA (a TV episode) but cannot see any video, only hearing sound.

I even updated to Windows Media Player 9 Series, but when that loads it it just says "connecting to codec / downloading codec / error in codec" and again gives me the audio only. I've tried it with an older version of Real Player as well, still with no video.

Is there anything I can do to fix this file?? Any editor or tool from the internet? As I said, it's very large and it would be a shame to lose it after spending all morning downloading it!

Okay I'm a bit lost here. If I download Xvid can I use it to repair my file? How do these codecs work? Is it similar to the LAME configurator for MP3's?

Thanks!

It is a codec that you install and it allows your media player to decode the video portion of the file you downloaded. It is not broken and does not need to be repaired.
Wait, that is the wrong Xvid page, you wnat to download it from here -> http://www.divx-digest.com/software/xvid.html
Sorry, you were going to download the Source code for the codec, and it wouldnt do you much good! My bad...
Dont forget to get the Divx codec, that is a good one along with the xvid codec..
