You can get Linux distros at www.linuxiso.org. If you have a second hard drive, I'd say format that and use it for Linux. If you don't, the other option would be to create a new partition on the current hard drive and install Linux there. It will install a boot manager (most likely Lilo) so you can select which OS to boot to when you start up.

If you only have one hard drive you may not even need to create a new partition as many of the linux cd`s will do it all for you. I have used mandrake 9 and red hat 9 and if you boot from cd the install will walk you through all you need.

I have 2 harddrives, C drive is 6 gigs, and D drive is 20 gigs. Is it possible for me to create a new partition on my D drive, and install Linux there?

get red hat or mandrake

you want to DAP (download acceletor plus speedbit.com) to speed up the thing, and resume the downloads if it get interrutped.

do you have cd-burner? thats very preferable,to boot linux and install it,even though there is another way around..

Just pay attention during the install, there is alot of hand holding going on.
Just a note... Windows 2K &/or XP are not picky about where they are installed, however, make sure you install your windowsOS first, the the Linux (or BSD) distro. windows over writes the MBR.
I also recommend setting up a Fat32 partition for file sharing between the OS's.

windows over writes the MBR.

I am also intereted of installing Windows XP and Linux on one hdd, and I am reading some books on it.
But now there is a question, what is MBR(MASTER BOOT RECORD) and what is it for?

The mbr is stored on the primary partion or the master hdd. It contains all the boot information. It tells your computer how to start windows. If you have multiple OS's it will ask you which one to boot into.
