Free software
I am about to purchase this laptop online and the salesmen states they are going to program it to my specifications and "States" that I can have any software I please. I've given him all my basics, but hell since he states "Any" I want to find one that would just be the best of the best. So If you could have any software/program you wanted for free what would it be?

Seems to me those are pirated versions of the programs.
Especially if he's loading them to the laptop with no charge. The only free programs I know of are Linux and apps for it. And for Windows, the only free office suite I know of is OpenOffice.

I agree, that sounds a bit shady.
What online store are you buying this laptop from? |

Programs are not free.
If somebody installs a program to your computer he *must* provide the original CD the program comes in. If I sell you a puter and install MS Office to it for free, then it's an illegal copy, because Office is not free. Same with games and almost any other program on the planet. Adding commercial programs to a computer for free is software piracy and you can go to jail and/or pay really high fines if you get busted. Last edited by Nuclear Krusader; 06-24-2003 at 01:21 PM. |

He may have a lot of software but it may be illegal copies even if he has all legal copies if he copies them on to your comp as well as his thats also illegal ( for most software)

When you buy software, you aren't buying the CD it comes on. You are buying a license to use whatever is on that CD. Thus, even if you have a hundred programs lying around, you can't just act as if they are your own property, copy them, and give them to other people. Without a license, you are not allowed to run a program. That is piracy.
I would be lying if I said that I had never copied a game or a piece of software in my life. However, what this guy is doing is pretty extreme. He could get into a lot of trouble for it, and so could you. It is not worth the hassle for a few "free" programs. |

Well i thought maybe his asking was out of line but if he has all these programs on his CPU that he bought and then sells me the CPU what is he suppose to erase the programs? Because the CPU is still his until money exchanges hands , So if he puts programs on his CPU and then sells it you're telling me thats a crime.

Whether or not it is a crime depends on the software EULA (that thing nobody ever reads).
Some EULAs allow the software to be transferred to a new owner as long as all of the accompanying documentation is transferred, including disks, manuals, etc. Some EULAs don't even allow for the transfer to a new owner, even if everything is turned over. When I have bought computers from used computer stores in the past, they have had no software on them other than an OS. I am sure that many people sell PCs to these places full of software, but without a license (or even with it) you can't transfer the software to a new user, so it all needs to be taken off. You wouldn't be the first person to buy a PC with a bunch of leftover software on it. However, you do need to know what the legal status of that software is. |

Maybe the price of the "free" software is figured into the selling price?
