Disk Defragmenter

Is the built in Windows XP Disk Defragmenter good, or are there better versions out there. Also in what period of time should I defragment my drive, weekly, monthly?

You can dl raxco's perfectdisk for a 30 day trial, and it will frag stuff that xp will never touch.
Defrag when you think about it.
You should also empty the precache folder too, every once in a while.

i have used my xp defragger a lot and have noticed a problem with it but u can do that one blakhart gave u

I use Diskeeper which has a free version that has limilted functionality, but it still does a better job than the XP defrag the only down side is you have to give a little personal info and e-mail to get the download.

Before defragment always run the analyze first to determine whether it should be defragmented,it's built into the defragmentor.
I always defrag my harddrive once every week......to maximize performance

I second Diskeeper. It works well. If you get the pay version, it can automatically defrag in the background, as well as do things like defrage the MFT on NTFS volumes, which normal defrag programs don't do.

The builtin defragger is adequate, and you can defrag while you work, unlike Win9x/ME. If you want something better, Diskeeper Pro is the best.

I personally like to use Norton System Utilities. There are a wide range of utilities, including a good defragmenter, that come with this suite of programs. Norton Speed Disk, I believe, is the name of the defragger that comes with Norton System Utilities. It can do numerous useful things. Also, I may add that the speed of this defragmenter has surpassed anything else that I have tried. It is, in my opinion, a much better and faster defragmenter than the one that comes with Windows.
