Whats are the differences between windows, linux, and unix?
What are each mainly used for? Which is easier to use? BTW- If this isn't the right forum, tell me and I'll post it in the right one. Last edited by Blue_matrix2k2; 07-09-2003 at 06:11 AM. |

Unix is an older OS that is quite proprietary and usually costly. One of the most popular unixes is BSD, which is what Apple's OSX is built on.
Linux is like Unix, except that it is Open Source, which means that it can be sold but the source code must be made available. This means that you can get any version of Linux for free. Both Unix and Linux are strong in the Server world. Some great strides have been made for the desktop though. Windows controls 95% of the desktop market, but a much lesser percentage of the Server market. It is generally not quite as stable or secure as 'nix' systems. Part of which has to do with it's ease of use but part is just the way that it is built. That is a very brief description of each. |
