Nero CD burn speed
I've got an unusual problem with Nero. I've got a Teac 48x burner and a Sony 52x burner in two different computers. The fastest that Nero will burn a CD using either one is 40x. I've tried using Imation media that's rated at 48x and I've also tried TDK media that's rated at 48x.
I've checked to make sure that Nero recognizes the drives using the info tool and it reports both drives correctly. I've used the latest versions of Nero 5.5 and 6 Here are the specs on my PCs: Dell Dimension 4100 | Win XP Home | 1ghz P3 | Intel 815 EEA | 512 MB PC133 | Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM | Sony CRX225E1 52x24x52 CD-RW| Maxtor 40 GB 7,200 RPM HD Custom Build | Win XP Pro | 2.53 ghz P4 | Asus P4PE-BP | 512 MB PC2700 | Sony 16x DVD-ROM | Teac 48x24x48 CD-RW | Maxtor 40 GB 7,200 RPM HD | Maxtor 80 GB 5,400 RPM HD |

I've got a Liteon 52x burner and I use Nero too. I prefer the Nero express over full version. Using 5.5 that came with burner. I currently only use Memorex 48x rated media and have had no problem burning at 52x. When I burn from my Audio Cleaning Lab software, it only burns at 32x, but that is just the max speed available in that software. Could it be that Nero thinks the media isn't suitable for that speed? I read somewhere that Nero checks the media for speed capability. Did your Nero come with one of the burners or did you buy it separately?

Thanks Panama. I bought Nero separately. I'll see if I can find some Memorex media to try. It kinda frustrating not being able to use my hardware at it's rated speed.

I have a 48x lite-on burner and at the time of purchase I still had about 45 TDK 16x compatible CD-R's that I was using with my older 8x burner. When the burner checked for max burn speed it came up with something like 24x or so and at the advice of REBOOT I just ignored that, changed it to 48x and never looked back. I have burned about 15 of the TDK's at that speed and still have not made a coaster. I have heard that the TDK are made of good quality so thats probably why I can do that on my burner, but I can't confirm that. Just my two cents.

Nero will only let you burn at whatever speed your media is rated at. Some media isn't rated at all though.

Depending on your original version of Nero. Some older ones that have been updated, will let you burn at whatever speed you want, regardless of what the media is rated at.
I have an original Nero 5, that's been updated, and I can burn any media at any speed, up to the max the burner supports. I have also found that TDK, EmTek, and Imation work really well. Some of the lesser known brands will barely burn at their rated speed, and you get lots of coasters. |

Here's something else to check, Boone. My computer/right click your CD_RW/properties/recording tab/ see if box is checked to record on this drive, if not check it, look at the bottom box to see what the setting is for record speed. Set it to fastest, then click apply. Not sure if this will fix your problem, but it's worth a try.
