UPDATE: Ok, I figured out what the problem was: I left the damn restore disc in the Cd-burner. Once I removed it--the 120g hd booted up as normal. Sorry to waste your time.
I've left the post in case anyone wants to read through it. Again, My Apologies! As some of U know I purchased a 2nd HD and was going to install it and attempt to use the compaq restore disk then upgrade to XP Pro. For a fresh/refresh here's the link to that thread: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=71565 I installed the 2nd HD (physically). I am using the www.nicklock.com drive selector device. I selected my WD 120g SE HD and booted up, no problem. I was hoping to format the 2nd HD (WD 80g SE) in XP thru the 120g HD- then isloate them from each other. XP recognised the 80g, but didn't assign a drive letter to it. As far as I know I initialized it, but what do I know? lol I could not get it formatted. So, I booted down, selected the new 80g and booted up. with the compaq restore disk. Ultimately, it cannot find the driver for the cd-burner (its newer than the compaq). I put in the cd-burner disk thinking-"maybe?" Nothing. I tried the restore disk several times-same story. I have tried the WD datalife guard floppy that came with the 120g, but I can't even get that to boot up. So, I put in the XP Pro disk hoping to format it in fat32 and then switch to the compaq restore disk. XP started loading the files, but my keyboard isn't detected until I get into windows (another story-another problem hehehe-going to buy a new one today), so I can't hit enter, repair or restore. Sheesh. Now on to my current problem: I finally booted down and switched to the original 120g that I've been running off of. Now it behaves exactly like the 80g--like a brand new HD. I get NOTHING. Its not broken--I'm wondering whether or not I some how "reformatted" it when I put XP into the 80G HD? Its recognised by the BIOS, etc. I just don't seem to have windows (or any other program) on it. In other words, No matter which drive I select they both now respond like new drives. I disconnected the nicklock jumper from the 80g, but that didn't make a difference for the 120g. I need to buy a keyboard and I will today. I ASSUME I need to select the 120g, put in the XP disk and hit restore. That's right, isn't it? Will I still have all the programs, etc that I've loaded over the last 2 months? Please say "Yes". Please, Please, Please. BTW, Nicklock says to jumper both drives to "master" but the 120g wouldnt work originally on that, so I did "cable select" and it worked. So, this time with both drives and the nicklock-I put them both on calbe select-I dont know if that helps or makes any difference. Im off to buy a keyboard, but I can really use some guidance here. I've laid it out the best I can, but throw any questions at me that u have. I really don't want to start from square one again. Last edited by Naja; 08-08-2003 at 02:13 PM. |
