Automatic DSL Connection? Possible?
Ok, I'll admit it, I'm spoiled. I just switched from Cable to DSL and I want my connection "ready" when I reach the desktop on bootup. I do not want to have to connect. Is there an automatic way to have the DSL connect on it's own upon startup?
Appreciate any help! adrianse |

My DSL connections is "always on." Do you have to dial in to establish a connection?
If not, perhaps your DSL modem is taking longer to sync with the server than it takes your computer to boot up. In that case, the computer finds no connection. I leave my DSL modem always on and always connected, even when I shut the systems down at night. That way, the connection is ready for the computer when it boots. The only time I turn the modem off is when I unplug everything for a thunderstorm. If that's not feasible for you, try setting things up so the modem can be powered up long before you begin the boot-up sequence on the computer so the connection is established by the time the operating system looks for it. |

My modem is always on, however I have to run through a "dial up" type of sequence to get the connection once I'm on my desktop. Any thoughts there?
Thanks |

Havn't herd of anything like that before. Have you trided contacting your dsl provider or the manufacturer of your modem. They might know something, maybe.

All I want it to do is connect automatically. I wonder if I created a new network connection if that would work.
Hmmm. |

SBC/YAHOO DSL is using software that makes a connection each time the computer is started. I do not know of any fix to this.

I have the same thing, but I like it Not always on. The computer is more secure this way and it's one less thing running if I want to edit videos or play games or the like. Just food for thought...

adrianse,
If I'm not mistaken, you are talking about a PPPoE connection, Point-to-Point-Protocol over Ethernet. I'm guessing you are using SBC/Yahoo service. I have the same thing, except it's on as soon as the PC boots up. The reason is because I have a wireless network setup and it comes with a PPPoE Client. So by the time the PC is finished booting, the networking utility has already established a connection and is ready to go. If you ARE using SBC, do a search on this subject. P.S. TwoRails is right though, it is more secure. And Yes, I am not using any of the software that came with the modem. ( I even stumped a Customer Service Tech with that one:P) |

Ok, I can live with it. And yes I do have the SBC Yahoo.
One other thing. When my computer boots up now with this DSL connection it takes almost a full minute before my system will let me connect, open a program or do anything else. It's as if it's trying to initialize something and won't bother to open the things I'm trying to open until it is done. Any ideas there? Thanks |

adrianse,
it may be that the pc has a lot of programs in the startup folder and that could be causing the delay. Maybe someone more knowledgeable in that area can elaborate on that. oh, what windows are you running and did you install the software from the SBC/YAHOO DSL cd? |

No I did not install the SBC software. I used XPs connection wizard to do the connection. I am familiar with startup issues and my startup folder is clear. This issue occurred right after I intalled the DSL connection, maybe I'll try installing the software from SBC.

sorry, i can't help you with the startup issue. it could be that the pc is just taking a bit more time to get synced with the modem.
the reason i asked about the softare is because if you install it, it just adds alot of junk to your system. I don't have a need for it so I didn't install either. If you don't need it, dont install it, it will be less clutter on your system. I also encountered alot of problems getting my XP machine to connect using their software. Of course that was before I figured out that XP has its own PPPoE Client. oh, if you haven't already done so, you can create a shortcut to the connection and place it on your desktop. Then you can just right click the connection and click Connect. Much easier than having to go hunt for the connection I hope I was able to help you out. |

if you have to click a shortcut to dial up just drag the short cut to your startup folder on the all programs menu or open the dial up network folder right click the conection you use and make a short cut and drag that to your start up folder

os
what operating system are you useing xp is supposed to have a PPPoE protocal built in i dont know where or how you would set it up though as i am parcial to routers because i can control out side access more securely either way the reason you computer is so slow is the 10 seperate peices of software that gets installed on you computer by the cd slows you down big time if you decide to setup on a router or through the PPPoE built into windows you can uninstall all the sbc junk and get you speed back on your system
