best virus protection
I've used McAfee VirusScan for awhile now and never had any problems with it. I always saw people on here saying that it is bad but never really understood why. So now there is all this MSblaster virus stuff going on and its times like these you want a good working virus portection. Well its almost completely stopped working. Everytime I try to update it gives me an "internal error" message. I could live with that, but when I got the blaster virus on my new build (which is almost done) after installing the McAfee firewall and VirusScan I got really mad. I mean the virus scan was running when I started getting the blaster virus message. It was actually scanning the computer and didnt even find it. So I was wondering what would be the best virus software to get, or download (free would be great). Because the McAfee is trash and I'm never using it again. Thanks.

McAfee is still good AV software. So is Norton, AVG, Kaspersky and plenty of others. The MSBlast worm is a different breed of virus - it enters your system through a buffer underrun on a TCP port. It's a security flaw that Microsoft has had a patch out for almost 4 weeks, but most people it seems neglected to get it.
I've repaired computers for friends and family that all had AV software running at the time of infection (Norton and AVG). This one's not the fault of the AV software, it's the fault of the user for not having the security patch in place. No offense, but that's the reality of the times. So IMO, keep McAfee, it's as good as any other on the market. |

I'm using AVG from www.grisoft.com on one of my machines. I believe that's the right address. Run a google search on AVG and it will come up. It is free, and I've heard many good things about it here.
I have PC-Cillin on my new comp (because it came w/ mobo), and it seems fine. I think there is cost involved if buying it new, tho.

The problem with McAfee products is that when they screw up they screw up big time and are hard to uninstall completely or reload. Their support also sucks when compared to Norton or even AVG Free version.

Yeah, I went to the support site for the "internal error" message thats been coming up and it was no help at all. I know that getting the new virus was my fault, but I'm really sick of McAfee. PC-Cillin also came with my new motherboard, but it keeps asking me to register and the software package didnt include a serial number for it.

40below,
PC-Cillin that comes with the new mobo works this way. Install it from the the mobo cd. At the registration prompt, it will take you to their online site. You fillout the questions they ask and they send you your registration # by email with instructions how to enter it. Works slick. Carl |

Oh now I see, I was confused because the other software that came with the motherboard included a registration number. Thanks.
