It's an acedemic version that is identical to a retail or OEM. If you qualify as a student or teacher, you can purchase at that price.

It would have to be in the box or students couldn't use it. I would like to know how they know if you are a student or not?

You cant upgrade it to the next version of windows. You use a student ID and all that to buy it. Kinda weird. But I do know that you cant upgrade that version to a newer windows. Example 2000 student to XP. That help?

I don't have $84 to waste on trying to see if it will work not being a student myself. I would only do it if I was one.

The one they are talking about is the upgrade version anyways. The one that upgrade 98, 2000, etc to Windows XP. There is a regular version you can buy for students which is like $100 or something. Still cheaper than the Windows XP or OEM versions.

Either the upgrade or the full will install a clean version that you don't have to upgrade from. It will just ask for the previous windows cd when installing. I have the xp home upgrade edition and clean installed it.
I use Norton Ghost to backup my system and can reinstall xp without activating each time. |
