What are these programs?
When I use ctrl+alt+delete and the close program box comes up there are a couple things listed that I don't recognize.
Findfast, Mhprmind, Osa, Navapw32, and Ptsnoop. Anyone know what these are?

Findfast;I think is something that goes with an office suite, such as microsoft office.Navapw32:Nortons
Ptsnoop: Is probably something to do with your modem, however there is a backdoor trojan of the same name so you may want to go to trend online virus scan to make sure.Mhprmind: I think is also part of an office suite.Osa: cant find much about this program, however it may be part of a database program that goes with a PDA or similar software.

PTSnoop has to do with Video settings and is usually disabled in BIOS. Mhprmind is a reminder to register software installed. It will pop up sooner or later usually with the option to remind ('rmind') you later. OSD (Not OSA) is normal and should be running. If it slows you down, you can uncheck PTSnoop and Mhprmind by running MSCONFIG and unchecking the box in Start up.

Ptsnoop PtSnoop.exe
(PCTEL) This background program is used by PCTEL modems. It is essential to the good functioning of those modems. Recommendation : If you used to have a PCTEL modem, but have since replaced it, use Startup Manager to delete the Ptsnoop.exe entry. Find Fast FindFast.exe (Microsoft) Microsoft Office Find Fast. This gets installed with Microsoft Office 95/97/2000. The supposed benefit of Find Fast is that it will enable you to find documents faster from within Microsoft Office. In practice : as with TASKMON it makes no visible difference to end-users, particularly on nowadays fast PCs. Thus, not only is Find Fast a total waste of time, but it is also a very significant annoyance too since, on many PCs, it results in the PC seemingly "freezing" for 2 to 5 seconds. Navapw32 Navapw32.exe (Symantec’s Norton AntiVirus) Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect for Windows 32-bit. This is the Windows 95/98/ME background Auto-Protect task from Norton Anti-Virus which protects your PC as you are using it (if you have Auto-Protect turned ON). Recommendation : Leave untouched ! Recommendation : Delete using Starter. Also go into the FindFast icon in the Control Panel and choose the "Index \ Close and Stop" menu option Osa Osa9 OSA.exe OSA9.exe (Microsoft) Microsoft Office’s Office Startup Application. Present in Microsoft Office 97, 2000, and XP where it is called OSA9.EXE. According to Microsoft, OSA enables Microsoft Office programs to start faster. It is our view, however, that most Microsoft background programs whose purpose is to enable you to "do something" faster, are a total utter waste of time and, worse, they also sometimes have extremely irritating side-effects which completely negate their supposed benefits (such as the annoying and infamous FindFast). Recommendation : Delete or disable using Startup Manager Mhprmind - Could be a Visioneer Scanner or Direct CD. |
