Boom Premiere and full HDDs

I have 2 WD 80GB 8MB cache 7200rpm drives which I have filled to the brim with film clips imported off of my digital camera. Because I have 5 partitions, they clips are spread out among them, the majority of them being in one place. The problem is when I try to preview my arrangement of the clips, the framerate has gone down to 1fps and the sound skips. When I try to export the timeline to the camera, the video goes fine, but the audio skips.

When I had some space on the HDDs and everything in one place it did not do this.

Is the problem that the disk is nearly full or that the clips are in different locations? Or is it a combination of both?

I have cleaned off everything I could, but it still wasn't enough. Would another HDD with all of the clips moved to there solve the problem?

Cool

Sounds like they have gotten fragmented. Possibly between both drives. You might try freeing up some space and then do a defrag. Then any that are causing problem you coud try copying to a new folder on the free space.

heh, free space is a problem now. I've already cleaned off everything I could.

I don't have enough room in any one place to put all of the clips together.

So... a new HDD it is, I guess. I'm gonna go for a WD 120GB JB drive

ff2k2-
from what I've read about computer video editting, you're best to get that 120 gig hd and use it only for your clips.
it sort of like when you put 699mb of data on a 700mb cdr....sometimes you end up not being able to read it because it's just too full...
of course, you could always get a dvd writer and use dvd rewrites.....but the hd is much cheaper in the long run...

but what do you do when the new hdd is full it wont take long with vid editing the dvd rw is a very good idear and are under £180 now add 20 disks and you have 90gb to play with for less than £220.00 and you never run out of space aggen

Force Flow your problem lies with your scratch disk. Premiere expects there to be one, you've given it multiple. And if the clips in one video project are from different scratch disks, you will experience exactly what you describe. Not to mention I'm sure your drives are fragmented as well from Premiere writing preview files anyewhere there is room.

HTH.

So there's a skratch disk that goes along with each clip in each loacation?

Hrm... I'll look into the DVD burner idea, andyms18a.

No, no, no. But I'm willing to bet you've got a scratch disk on a few of those partitions. And once a project is started, there's no easy way to revert back to one scratch disk.

you are still operating under very tight limitations. it would be best to first put your new hard drive in and then move your work to it. then you will have "room to move around"
it's kind of like when you have too little memory...everything slows down because of the limitation...
after you have things worked out, then I think considering a dvdburner would be wise....

Even if the scratch disk is set to one partition, Premiere uses temp directories - and if they are not set then they are in the same directory as the clip.

And remember, if you move your work you'll lose any previews you've built since the scratch/temp directories will have changed. But it won't be a big deal with Premiere to re-build those previews.

HTH.
