What's your video card/DVD drive ?
Before you buy anything you might have the program you need.
It's just that it's unused and needs an update ( read that as free, maybe ) .
In short, we need specs.

You need to go to DivX.com and download the free divx codecs for your computer. I think it is on version 5.0.5. Install them on your computer and then you should be able to watch DVD's on their DivX Playa or Windows Media Player. Hope it works out ok!

Windows Media Player can play DVDs but you have to unlock that "hidden" feature in the registry. At least with version 8. I dunno if version 9 comes with the feature already unlocked.

Anyway, I'd use anything but that hateful WMP.

Do what Pam says. Most video cards and DVD drives come with either WinDVD or PowerDVD.

I prefer PowerDVD, but that's just a personal preference. Both of them are good.

Again people want advice but give no geographical location. Quite often the solution to a problem is totally geographical.

I live in San Francisco and have transportation. I can wait for the near weekly computer shows and get a software DVD player for about $5-10.

My youngest lives out in the boonies and has to shop at retail outlets. Such can run upwards of $50. In which case, it may be cheaper to get a whole retail box drive that comes with software!
