For extracting audio, CDex and Exact Audio Copy would be my choice. I prefer CDex simpley because it's so much faster than EAC and almost as good. Plus CDex allows you to select what codec you're using to rip, EAC defaults to the LAME encoder, which I personally do not like.

I never understood the need for a special 3rd party program to copy files from a cd....I just open the cd in windows explorer, highllight the tracks I want to "rip" and copy them to a folder....once they are on your hd, if you need to, then you can convert them with a converter program.
