Disc defragmenter won't work

For some reason, my disc defragmenter won't work. It starts and gets to 1% completed and sticks there. I've left it for a few hours and it never gets beyond there. I have WinME 633.

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Try going into Safe Mode and running a full Scandisk.

If it finds minor error and fixes them, then try running Defrag - in Safe Mode.

To get to Safe Mode, start your computer up and hold the Shift key...the system will go straight to Safe Mode.

If your computer is a name brand computer, the Shift key may not work. You may only be able to get to the Boot Menu by pressing the Ctrl key or one of the Function keys at the top of your keyboard. Once you get to the Boot Menu, choose the Safe Mode option.

Virus Scan first to eliminate any possible interference there...

As others have said, you probably have programs running in backround, you can go safe mode, but just as easy to boot-up, hit "ctrl-alt-del" and 'end-task' all but Explorer and Systray...Then run clean, then Scan disc, then do defrag===>do not touch your mouse or keyboard during defrag process or it will start again.....Depending on last time you defragged, this could take minutes or hours----again DO NOT MOVE MOUSE OR HIT KEYS........Defrag tends to slow more towards the last 10% or less, let it run!!

If you have Ad-aware, run it first, then Regclean, then the Virus Scan, then proceed with clean/scan/defrag.....
