Can i downgrade direct x?

I have half-life and like to play a lot of the modifications, specifically natural selection. However, since i have upgraded my dx, i've noticed that whenever i run in direct3d or opengl that the game has a tendancy to freeze. Many people have had the same problem and now i want to know if i can just downgrade to direct x 8?

After installing Direct X did you reinstall your drivers? If not try reinstalling your vid. drivers to see if that solves the problem... You might also want to check for newer drivers...

with my ati card i had to download newer drivers for it to work properly with directX 9.

yeah, i updated the drivers but that didn't help, so i tried getting previous driver releases and that didn't help either. I guess it really doesn't matter because im going to be installing xp in awhile and i'll make sure not to get higher than 8
