Norton AntiVirus 2002 Script Errors

My Dell Inspiron 2500 came with Norton AntiVirus 2002 (ver 8.0) pre-installed and it worked fine up until my subscription ran out. So I went online and purchased a 12-month subscription so it went ahead and started downloading the new things via Live Update. Immediately after I rebooted and went into NAV there were problems. Specifically with Script Errors. Firstly, NAV is no longer represented by the little computer with the little lifeline in front of it. It is now a white box with a blue line on top.

Auto Protect is off and when I try to enable it I get:
"An Error has occured in the script of this page.
Line: 887
Char: 5
Error: Unspecified Error
Code: 0
URL: res://C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVUI.dll/navstats.htm"

It asks me do I want to continue running scripts on this page and no matter whether I click yes or no, it has no effect.

The same happens when I click Perform Full System Scan except the error is on line 932, char 8

When I go into Options to enable Auto-Protect, I check the box and click OK I get another script error with line 29, char 5, URL res://C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVOpts.dll/optionsbtm.htm

Symantec have been less than helpful. They suggested going into Services and enabling Auto-Protect which I did to no visible effect. They claim it is a problem with IE and say I should install it. However, the last I checked, IE 6 is a pretty big file and with a 28.8 dial-up connection, it would suck. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong?

I appreciate the help!

You can always set to download overnite. It'll be done downloading by morning anyway, right?

If you get sick of dealing with Symantec, you can always use AVG as your anti-virus prog. You can download it from www.grisoft.com, and it is free with free updates. Many speak highly of it here.

thanks, I'm going to give AVG a try. NAV is just what I liked working with, I like the interface but hey, there is no good in it looking good if it cannot stop viruses!

btw, internet access in Ireland costs money per minute. Its not a lot, about 1c/min but still....

I would see about getting a refund for the new subscription you purchased from NAV since it wouldn't work for you.

hey back to that first post. i have a friend that is having the same problems with the script errors on norton. and he has sbc yahoo dial up on a win xp computer. any suggestions?? i'm going to tell him to go into internet properties and disable script debugging but i don't think this will fix the problem. he doesn't have any kind of protection against spyware. so hes going to download spybot and hopefully that will get rid of this problem.
