How to prevent programs launching on startup?

I have a Windows XP Pro setup and have around 10 programs or systray items launch on startup.

I have looked in the usual startup folder within windows xp but I only found 2 of them.

My question is - Is their any way of disabling these programs from launching at startup? maybe somewhere in the system registry?

Any help appreciated!

There's a couple ways to do it with XP, but I still use the old MSCONFIG method. Start/run/msconfig/startup tab. Remove the check from the items you don't want to start up. The other method is going thru Administrative Tools.

Cheers Panama Red! Great tool which I have never discovered before (neither have I seen it documented to my knowledge - Typical Microsoft!)

Would this work in win9x and 2000 enviroments also?

It does for 98, not for 2000.

Reg Cleaner also has a utility that lets you remove them and you don't have to reboot like MScofig. http://www.pcmedixwebs.com/regclean.htm

Win98, ME, and XP come with msconfig. 2K does not, but you can copy msconfig.exe from an XP box and use it in 2K.

Lightbulb

Win XP Pro dosent like it to much on some programs when you disable them on start up. You should look into just turning off the system try icons first.

Your absoulutely right Radioactiveninja that's why I recommended RegCleaner, you can remove the starup programs with no protest from XP.
