Taskbar icons
How can I get rid of the icons on my taskbar (by the clock) in Windows 98? I am assuming that this will free up more RAM, and will keep most of these programs from running in the background. I just got this computer from a buddy of mine and it is pretty slow. Thanks to anyone that can help.

It would be a big help if you can tell us what those icons are. Or at least maybe a screenshot.
My suggestion is to remove all noncritical progs on the StartUp menu. Next you may want to examine Msconfig.sys to disable other progs you don't need.

As james8547 indicates, that is a vague question, dpuckett. You can get rid of the icons by either, 1) "hiding" them, or 2) not run the program that shows the icon.
But, are you referring to actual memory, or are you meaning system resources? Hiding icons obviously won't help, but not running un-needed programs will. Freeing up system resource in Win 98 (or pre-XP) basically can only be done by *not* running programs. |
