Norton Ghost help
I don't know very much about this software with the exception that I heard it makes a back up of your hard drive. Can I make a back up of a hard drive onto another hard drive? Can I make a copy of my master hard drive and then use that back up to boot a new build? Is it worth buying?

I have NAV and ghost in my PC. I haven't actually fiddled with ghosts yet. But my bro says that you can revert back your HD from a ghost if I goof up my registry/settings/files. The ghost came with NAV so I installed it.

Ghost makes an exact replica of the drive. If you ghost a drive you can then replace the source drive with the ghosted drive on the ribbon and it will boot up exactly like the original. The term Norton uses is clone, so you would want to clone the drive.

Ghost Rocks!
Personally I think that ghost is just about the best single piece of software ever written - period.
Well worth getting to know. My suggestion would be to partition your disk and ghost the OS / apps partition to the data partition (quick and simple backup and restore both within 10 or 20 mins usually). The only risk you then carry is that the HDD totally dies, but you can backup the data partition (including your ghost image file(s)) to CD or elsewhere. I also always use ghost run from pure DOS (boot disk). I am always sceptical about backing up anything from within itself, although others here may have a different view. I am just risk averse on this one. My tuppence worth. David. Last edited by David_Jones; 09-24-2003 at 05:17 AM. |

If you use the clone option then that IS done at DOS level.
