looking for a Bios
I'm trying to update the Bios dirver for a Compaq Presario 5460. Can any one tell me where to get one besides the compaq support site and driverguide.com. I'm trying to install a 40gb WD HDD but not even fdisk nor the life guard tool from WD will recognize the HDD and Some times the computer gets stock at the red Compaq logo. I've tried using diferent jumper settings, two diferent 40gb HDDs, anything that u can imagine. I'm sure that updating the Bios will be the answer but it is hard to find one for a 5460. Thanks to anyone willing to help me.

Download Aida32 and see what it says under "bios type." Phoenix, Award etc....I doubt Compaq makes thier own but I could be wrong.

compaqs suck at upgrading, their bios only let a certain number of GBs of hardrive. On the website(before HP took over) it would tell you wat the max hd u could have. anyway u have to buy a pci ata controller card and hook the HD to that, in order for it to work.

Are you certain that the cables you have used and the jumper settings are absolutely correct? It doesnt hurt to recheck the connections, jumpers or even test the HDD in another system before you hit the panic button and buy a PCI card etc.
The presario 5460 will easily take in a 2nd hard drive, at least according to their support : http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/any/na/...6864&cat=setup |

I tried every jumper setting and both 40 pin and 80 pin IDE cables. The HDD that came with the computer, the 8gb one broke. Apparently, the HDD had a bunch of bad clusters and half the HDD was bad. So i'm not just trying to add a 2nd HDD.

Compaq makes it very difficult to replace hard drives due to the proprietary partitioning - and you will never get a 40gb drive working in it without a controller card or a software bios overlay. Your best chance is to use the cylinder limiting jumper on the drive (I think WD calls this "special") - this will make it be seen as either a 8gb or a 32gb drive. You will need the Softpaq from Compaq to set up the diagnostic partition on the drive because the restore CD will probably choke on a hard drive that's not the same size as the original drive.

If all you have is a Recovery CD (and not Quick Restore), it's going to choke on any new drive. That's because Compaq put the data the Recovery CD uses to restore the drive on a second partition on the harddrive. The Quick Restore disks contain everything needed to restore the software to original factory condition.

i tried using a Win98 se CD but that couldn't recognize the HDD either. The Recovery CD didn't work as you said.

Have you tried the Special jumper settings? Also remember that WD uses different jumpering for master WITH and WITHOUT a slave present. Compaq cables *should* support Cable Select instead of master/slave.

Yep!, I've been trying to fix this for what, 4-5 months now? something like that. It seems that the only solution left is that pci ata controller. Can anyone recomend me one, one that will work with this kind of computer. It a Compaq presario 5460. Thanks!!!

Have you tried contacting compaq explaining that your original HDD that contained your BIOS partition was lost; they might give you a recovery CD that will create a BIOS on non-mfger hdd
