Upgradging Windows Question...

Hey all, i have a rather simple question and would just liek some opinions on what i should do. I built my home PC about 3 months ago, it's a pentium 4 2.4 ghz, anyways the first OS i installed on it was Windows XP sp1. Installation went fine but i got random reboots every 10 minutes or less and although i tried and tried i found no fix. SO i reformatted and installed my windows 98 se CD and it worked like a charm. I like it but i have NEW games that don't run very well in windows 98 and hardware that has compatibility issues with windows 98 and i'd LOVE to update to XP to hopefully solve everything. I don't want to install it and have the same problem and have to reformat... if windows XP fails, can i simply downgrade to windows98 without losing my files? or is that not an option... what should i do? I REALLY WANT XP AGAIN! thanks all

Check this page of threads. Sounds a lot like the Blaster Worm that was going around.
