free firewall?
are there any good free firewalls out there? I'm using mozilla right now, but im not sure if it includes built-in firewall functionality. after hearing about all these virus attacks, I'm feeling a bit nervous

Are you on dialup or broadband? With dialup I never worried about one. I'm on broadband now and use a hardware firewall that is a function of the router I use.
For Software, most here prefer Zonealarm from Zonelabs. There are others. just do a search of these forums. XP has a adequate firewall built in if you are running that. Chas

You'll probably be getting a lot of responses for this one, but no, mozilla doesn't have a firewall.
For good free ones check out ZoneAlarm and Sygate firewall There are tons more out there though. Dswissmiss Edit: confused beat me to it

I don't use Zone Alarm anymore ever since their little "upgrade to newer ZA version and lose internet connectivity as a bonus" fiasco not too long ago.
I'm using Sygate and Kerio on my various computers and so far have had zero problems with them. Cricket

I agree with Confused, if you're on dial-up, I wouldn't worry about it. Personally, I like Sygate tho.

Used to use ZA a few years ago, but now I too use a hardware firewall/router combo and have no problems. Heard good things about Sygate...

If you are running Windows XP, I would use a firewall even if you are on Dial-up, or at least until all the security holes get fixed

I'm running PC-cillin on XP w/ dial-up. It lists a Personal Firewall on its control panel. Good enough, or more protection needed?

have another question. sygate sometimes uses a lot of recources and considerably slows down my computer to the point that i have to restart the program (in task manager, the program smc.exe's cpu usage is always the highest)
thats actually one of the reasons i switched from zonealarm to sygate, but are all firewalls so recource hungry, or is keiro a lot lighter? thanx |

You'll need to uninstall the others, and disable the XP one, then try Kerio again. It has (by far) the lightest footprint, and easiest to configure.

Thanx reboot, installed Kerio and it definately is lower on system resources... PCNUBY, I definately recommend you give it a try.

I'm on a dialup and I still use a firewall, one of my machines got welchia within about 15 minutes I had the firewall off (ironically enough I was actually installing the firewall). I've been buying Norton Internet Security annually since it came on one of my computers a few years ago.
I highly recommend it, the firewall is excellent and fairly nonintrusive and doesn't slow down my machine. And of course, it comes with Norton Antivirus which is also very handy ;-) Just my two pennies worth. |
