Windows 98
The OS on my PC is Windows 98SE.
It has a floppy disk drive and a Iomega Ditto 3200 tape drives connected to the floppy disk connector on the motherboard. My disk drives is connected to a SCSI board on the motherboard. The device manager shows exclamation marks on the CND PCI-0646 Bus Master PCI to IDE controller and the Standard IDE/ESDI hard disk controllers. The error message for the 0646 device is that the BIOS did not assign an IRQ to the device as it was not enabled. To correct this, we went into the BIOS and enabled both the primary and secondary channels. The next bootup had no exclamation mark on the 0646 device but now there are marks on the IDE/ESDI device, Primary and Secondary IDE controllers. Actions taken to remedy this situation include: 1. Remove the devices through the Device Manager. 2. Updating the drivers. None has worked. Also, the Device Manager shows two Floppy Disk Controllers, although there should only be one. There is an asterisk on the second unit shown in the Manager. Can some genius out there please help me to: 1. Remove all the exclamation marks on the units. 2. Remove the second listing of the Floppy Disk Controller in the Device Manager. By the Way, the PC seems to work fine. Thanks in advance. |

You may try to go into Safe Mode upon boot up. Often 98 has a tendency to have "ghost listings" of different hardware in device mgr which will all show up in Safe Mode. They can then be removed from there, and that may help straighten out some of the conflicts.
Worth a try, anyway. HTH.

Hi there , sorry to have to tell you that this doesn't work... the 0646 controller in dual configuartion with either Intel or Adaptec chipsets will always give a yellow flagged entry..
But since you use SCSI as your hard drives the thing you can do is to disable the IDE controllers in the BIOS and then set the Bios to reinitialiaze the board - set to NON PLUG AND PLAY and boot back to Windows SAFE mode remove the IDE controllers and then restart.. This actually should take care of the problem.. Hpro

Thanks Hpro. I will try your suggestion and see what happens. You are right about Kov-Ice's proposed solution. It did not work. By the way, does this mean that I will not be able to have drives connected to the IDE controllers as long as I have the current configuration.
Kov-Ice, thanks for trying to help. I greatly appreciate it. |

Hpro:
In the Safe Mode, the Primary and Secondary IDE controllers could not be removed. The message states that they are part of a Parent Device, no details provided. |

Hi there ,
you need to remove the complete controller - and since you are using SCSI so it doesn't make any problem...and this is possible - I had once before a board like this and I fought with this aobut a month - I also found a way by modify the registry but this is way back and takes quite some time as well. Hope this helps at least a little.. Hpro |

Here's a trick to remove a flagged duplicated controller - such as your floppy controller - remove the UNFLAGGED one, and leave the flagged one, and reboot.
CMD IDE controllers are a pain in the butt, looks like you have a choice here - use SCSI or use IDE, but not both. |
