Money and Outlook backup
Hello everyone.
I am fixing a friends computer. I used a second hard drive with Windows XP to scan for and eliminate the viruses that were on the original hard drive (with Windows 2000). However the OS is still damaged so I’m going to reformat. I am backing up files from the original hard drive to the second hard drive. My problem is that I need to back up the user data for MS Money and Outlook Express, but I don’t use these programs myself so I don’t know where the user data is and what it’s called. So I was wondering if someone who is familiar with these programs could tell me where I can find the data. Please note that I cannot run these programs because they are on the hard drive that has the damaged OS, and I cannot load them from the second hard drive. I need to backup the data manually. Thanks. I don't use Money but I would think it would have a backup under the file tab like Quicken that I use.
I have used the method outlined here for Outlook Express http://www.iopus.com/guides/oe-backup.htm Chas

1. Outlook Express:
Search the drive for *.dbx files - you will find several, when you find a folder that has inbox.dbx and deleted items.dbx along with several other files, you found it. If there's more than one, either the person is using multiple identities or one or more are inactive. Save each folder you find. To bring them back into the new installation, you run the Import Messages function in OE and import from a store directory - the saved folder is the store directory. If you are backing up to CD, you must copy these folders to the new drive first to a temporary location and remove the read-only attributes before the import. To save the address book, look for .wab files, save them, and you can import them into the new installation the same way. 2. Money: Money likes to save its database in My Documents, search for *.mny files. |
