Norton AV question....
A friend's computer will likely require a complete reformat and reinstall of Windows XP. The problem is she recently (about 2 months ago) purchased Norton AV online, ie, she downloaded the program and paid online with her credit card. After the reformat and reinstall of the OS, how does she go about getting Norton AV back (short of purchasing it again) as she's already paid for the license. Has anybody run across this issue before?

she should have a username and password or a serieal number for it, or someother record that will be needed, also she should have saved the file that was downloaded.
the first question is why do you think xp needs to be reinstalled, there is nothing withen it that cannot be repaired wothout reinstalling it, that would defeat the whole pourpose of having xp. |

bailey,
Now that you mention it, I might be able to use the XP repair feature available when booting from the cd; however, when I use that, XP asks for the "administrator password" to continue with the repair process. There is no password on this computer! What now? |

bailey,
that would take me back to XP Home, the problems began after an upgrade to XP Pro. |

then somewhere it thinks there is a password.
I read a post that if you give it the 3 key salute twice, it will let you log in as the admistrator. I havn't tried that but maybe it might work |

Ron, the recovery console and the repair are not the same thing, you can skip the console and go on with the install, once the setup sees the exiting install it will offer you the choice to repair (install over) or continue with a new install.
As far as the password the upgrade prompted for a password during the upgrade and unless there was a password entered there is no Admin password. If the AV was purchased online she should have an e-mail with the serial number, username and password for the software.

The way Norton works is this - if she did not purchase the "download insurance" with it, she is gonna be out of luck unless you can rescue the setup file.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing - whenever you download paid-for software like this, always back up the install file somewhere. Why don't you pull the hard drive and slave it into your machine and see if you can find the install files - then burn a CD? |
