XP and disk defrag
Just this afternoon tried to do a disk defrag on the C drive on my newer machine with XP on it. Volume is 25 gb and was almost full a week ago before I started deleting stuff. It now has about 6 gig free and I figured it was time for a defrag.
I have Norton Systemworks 2002, which came in a bundle with some hardware. My previous experience with Norton is that Speed Disk was a good defragger. What happened??? It runs foever and doesn't seem to be doing much. Over 2 hours, going on 3 and it wasn't done. I accidently interrupted by hitting the space bar to stop it, but I was getting real impatient. I don't need a ton of options just a good disk organizer. Suggestions ???? For the questions I expect to come up, the disk volumes are FAT32. And I turned off the anit-virus before I started. There are 2 volumes on one 40gig drive. |

I think that SpeedDisk just doesn't like XP. Even NSW 2003, which is blazingly fast on my Win 98 system, just crawls on my XP box. And, it doesn't even show the same options. Hopefully, version 2004 corrects this, as that is one of the main reasons I like NSW in the first place.

So the suggestion is to try the Win XP defrag??
The Windows version was always the slower one. And Win and Norton seem to disagree on how to optimize. For example I did the D drive, which hardly needed it, with Norton. If I analyze it with the Win utility, it says it needs to be defragged. ![]() I noticed Norton was missing some options too. |

Diskeeper 8.0 Workstation, set it and forget it. Never manually defrag again.
