OS X Panther Release
Well, It's 5.00pm and Panther gets released at 8.00pm. Off to the Apple store I go to stand in line. Too bad I don't get free software from Apple like I do M$, oh well.

I saw a presentation of Panther, and I was impressed with the features that were being included. Especially some of the networking features for both PC and MAC platforms. Hopefully they will actually work as advertised in practice...

So I stood in line for about an hour last night, then thought better of it as it looked like I would have an additional 2 hours or so to wait and I figured I would just go back another day to get panther.
So I went back there today, and I got panther, although not the way i thought i would. Instead I figured I was at the Apple store so why not just get a powerbook, so I did, a nice new 12" superdrive model. It didn't come with panther though. It came with a coupon to get it in the mail for free. Well that wasn't good. I didn't stand in line and then go back the next day just to leave without panther. So I talked them into giving me a copy ![]() I'm Installing it now and will report on it's performance soon. ps: I still have the coupon for the free copy, so i'll be able to install it on a 2nd mac too.

OK, I've had an evening to play with this and I would recommend panther to anybody with a Mac/Windows network for ease of use. Printing from the Mac to a Windows shared printer is now just a matter of browsing for the printer (bout time) and the gimp-print drivers are built in so I doubt theres many printers out there that won't work. Viewing servers and shares is now done from the browser with no need to mount the server first (a la my network places) although passwords are still not saved in the keychain when doing this (that has to be fixed, I know it's for security reasons, but com on). Apple have made some big steps forward with windows interoperability with this release. Of coures, having a new powerbook to play with it on doesn't hurt either.

I couldn't resist and had to add a photo of the new toy. This thing kicks ass. It's a 1ghz G4 with a DVD Burner. It encodes AAC files almost twice as fast as my 1.4ghz athlon desktop
