pop up adds out of control
am running winxp home/service pack 1 withy internet explorer 6.0
for about 3 days: pop up adds are appearing almost constantly--some completely take over the screen...if i go to task manager, it shows about 6 add. programs coming in vis internet explorer..im running aol 9.0 with its own (IE bsaed) browser. same thing happens if i run another ISP.. when not on line, i get the little window indicator that something is trying to access the internet but im off line. Ran Ad-aware/Spybot..no help. Ran McAfee virus checker--no viruses indicated. is there any hope short of erasing the hardrive and reinstalling the OS? tx |

I had the same problem and used ads gone. It seems to be working fine. The only differance is that I ran spybot and it did find things.

Try the free version of Popup Stopper from www.panicware.com Works great for me running XP and IE5.

The Google Toolbar works great as well.

Mozilla works great for those pesky pop-ups.

If you have programs trying to access the 'net, there is something wrong.
Make sure you have the latest definitions when you run AdAware and Spybot. I wouldn't trust McAfee. Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and do a virus check. Use a browser other than IE, like Mozilla or Opera. |

I think im going to completely erase the hardrive and reinstall the OS. No doubt there is much corruption therein and probably a complete erase-reinstall is ther best-alebit timeconsuming-solution.
Ive never done this with an 'XP" OS--I take it I can use a bootdisc to access the command prompt and issue the usual format command to erase the drive..this is how i used to do this with win9x. My WinXP is using NTFS--will a "regular" bootdisc work to perform the formatting..i dont see why not.. thanx for all the advise! will report what happens. I hope the HDD hasnt begun a death process...as.....when i attempted to download the windos XP updates, comput stalled on their installation and was making a strange soft semi grinding sound over and over until i shut down. Maybe ill get a new HDD--one with higher capacity and 8 mb cache! |
