Napster 2.0--Roxio Did It Right (I believe)
Roxio really did it right with the launch of Napster today. It is my sisters birthday tomorrow and I wanted to make her a CD, but didnt want all the ads on my computer, so I downloaded Napster (I also wanted to try it because it was launched today). It was really easy to use, easy to browse, preview, buy and burn songs. I downloaded the 5 songs she wanted, payed $.99/song, and burnt them to a CD right from the Napster Interface, and even downloaded the "Roxio/Napster Label Creator", to create a label. I have to say that that was not the easiest working label creator that I ever used, but hey, it was free. I really like it, it beats having ads on your computer and the possible chance of being caught by the RIAA.

How is the song quality? How big is the song collection? Do you have a link that I can visit? Could I d/l the song into my HD and burn it later?
This made me curious. I usually get song samples by AIM, Kazaa, and other p2p. I probably have less than 500mb worth of "bootlegged" songs (most of them are Asian pop songs) so I'm not afraid of the RIAA. If I can get a song for less than a buck, then I'm in. It sure beats the crap out of buying the whole freakin album for just one or two songs. ***edit: Maybe I should invest in Napster....

Song Quality is Great....if you go to Napster.com, you just download the free software, get a username and password and you can search the database of songs, I think I heard somewhere 500,000 or something...there is no obligation to buy....if you find a song you think you might like, you hit play, and you get a 30 second preview clip. Then you buy a song it downloads to a pre determined (by you) spot on your hard drive for later use. You can burn a song as many times as you want, it says, but you can only burn the same playlist a few times (i am not sure how many) but that is just to prevent piracy, if you get an error while burning saying something about (you have reached your limit) just put the song into a new playlist. Also insteadf of 99cents/song, if you want an entire album of maybe 20 songs it only costs 9.99....I think it is really a good deal...
My advice to you: DOWNLOAD THE PROGRAM, test it out....it's free, there is no obligation to buy anything, you can preview as many songs you want. And you're right it beat the heck out of buying a whole CD, for example, one of the songs I bought was Unwell by Matchbox Twenty, but I absolutely hate the rest of the songs on their CD, so now I am happy! |

I got Napster. The Play/Preview feature is really handy. Now I'm going to track down all the live songs I've been itching to get. Don't you just hate it when they do a "greatest hits" album and place 2 new releases in it? I have the other 12 songs in the CD and now they want me to pay $18 just to get the 2 new ones?!

The downloads are as fast as your connection....when I was downloading them yesterday, they were downloading 2 at a time, and one was going 111kbps, and the other was at 80kbps, so i got 190, and that is around what i usually get with my cable connection....(i usually get 190-210kbps)....
Also the subscription service you can download as many songs as you want for that month, but if the next month you dont pay the 9.99 subscription fee you no longer have access to the song, where as if you pay $.99/song you keep the song forever. |

Also with the subscription service you can download or stream as many songs as you want, but to burn them to a cd or put them in a digital music player you have to purchase the track for $.99.

Doesn't Apple desrve any credit? Maybe it's just me being a Mac and PC user, and their service is on both platforms, liked the sound on iTunes better, and no sign up. Maybe it's just me, but I think both are worth a try, I am gonna stick to iTunes though...

Yeah, I give some credit to iTunes, i never tried it thought but i can assume it was good because it supposedly (i read somewhere) that it increased iPod sales by like some hundred percent. And i t did seem pretty anticipated for PC.

One feature the iTunes has that no other service willhave (it's patented) is the allowance feature. Instead of giving your kids free rein with the credit card, parents can set up an account for them and apply a certain amount of money for them to spend so they can't go over. Oh yeah, another is the 1 click purchase, no that it really hurts to have to click more than once. Also apple doesnt bill you on your card for each individual song (like buymusic) but instead adds up the total for the day and apply's 1 charge only, be interesting to see if Napster does the same thing.

The Service allows you to listen to Samples (as defined below) and obtain downloads of sound recordings ("Tracks") and related digital content ("Materials"). To access the Service, you will need to install or activate Napster's proprietary software application; from time to time, you may also be required to install other software made available through the Service (collectively this software is called the "Client"). You may also need to install certain third-party software. You are responsible for any hardware, systems and/or software program(s) you use and any associated fees and expenses (a) to connect to or use the Internet, and/or (b) other than the Client, to use any Materials. The Napster Service, the Tracks and the Materials are only for your personal, noncommercial use.
3rd party software huh, can you say Gator. |

No Gator. As far as anyone can tell so far there is no spyware. They are most likely referring to things such as Media Player 9.
I think the new napster is great. My only small complaint is the sound quality. On some songs things can sound slightly tinny, such as symbols. But not a big deal. Still better quality than any songs I've gotten from kazaa. GhostRecon, Honestly, give it a try. The sound quality is much better than most songs found on any p2p networks. It is always reliable. Downloads are extremely fast (350ish kBps for me). Sure, 99 cents per song may be a little much, but it will probably go down in a bit since there are now a few legal services like this competing. And the premium membership is great, even if you can't convert the songs to different formats (which means no cd burning). And best of all, it's legal.

Quote from that article "The iTunes Music Store offers Windows users the same online music store as Mac® users with the same music catalog of more than 400,000 songs"
Not that it really matters...but napster advertises more than 500,000 songs.... |

I'd rather pay the 10 bucks a month than 99 cents per song. That's why I like napster over iTunes right now. I'd already be down about 100 bucks if I bought each song for 99 cents. Instead so far I'm only down $9.95.

Yeah, I rarely play CD's so I might start looking into the 9.95/month service...
