compressing problems

I recently ripped the matrix reloaded to my hard drive and it is about 2 GB too large for the normal 4.7 gig dvd+r disc. i was wondering how to compress the video to make it fit onto the cd.

please help.

I want to make it DivX, but i dont know how.

and if i can't play a DivX on my dvd players, then i dont want to do it.

maybe there is an alternative to DivX that CAN fit on a regular DVD+R disc and ALSO can play on a dvd player at home.

thanks alot for your help.
