Critical Updates
For those of you (like me) that have automatic updates notification turned off, MS has posted new Critical Updates for IE6. A recent article said MS will be providing updates monthly now.

Multigroup. I am not sure but I think you go into the Setting> Control Panel> Automatic Updates> uncheck “Keep my computer update.” Not sure but maybe someone else know if this not correct.

Actually, it's in the Services section of Admin Tools. Here's how to get there. Start/control panel/Admin Tools/Services shortcut/automatic updates. Right click on it and select properties. Then change "automatic" to disabled, click apply, and stop if it's running. For other services tweaks to limit unnecessary services running on start up, go to this link, but read it thoroughly before you make any changes.

In 2K, it's in Control panel - Automatic Updates. In XP, it's in Control panel - System - Automatic Updates. You can set it to automatically download them and notify, automatically download and update at a specific time, just notify when available, or completely off.

Why do so many of you have the automatic updater turned off?

Thanx for that redirect, glc. I never pay any attention to the auto update tab cuz I disable it when I rework the services.
s_layton, to answer your question, I turn off the updater and several other services just because they tend to run in the background of your system and use resources thereby slowing down your processing time. The least amount of programs or services that run at one time the faster your system will execute. I keep a link to Windows Updates in my Favorites area and remember to check weekly for updates. MS had been issuing updates weekly, usually on Wed, but I just read where they are going to provide updates on a monthly basis only. Think that was on ZDNet |

That's why you set it to notify only - then you can screen what it wants to feed you.
I have mine disabled for only one reason - I'm running IE 5.01 and I have *NO* desire to upgrade to IE6, and if I had auto updates enabled at ALL it would constantly bug me. |

I don't *use* IE for anything except sites where nothing else works. I use Opera for all I can and Mozilla/Firebird next - IE is last resort.
