Windows XP upgrade?
Hello everyone. Well, I'm getting ready to build my first computer, and I'm gonna go with the Windows XP operating system. Since I've never built a computer, I dont know much about how the installation process works.
I noticed that the prices for the upgrade is way cheapter than the service pack. I just want to confirm, since I'm building this computer from scratch, I WONT be able to install the upgrade to it right? I have another computer at home that uses Windows ME, and of course, I could upgrade that, but I'd have to still get the full version for the computer I'm building right? Thanks for the help. |

Buy the OEM version. Should be no more than $90. You can get it with hardware purchase from a place like www.newegg.com

yeah, that does look like a great deal. Now if I get the OEM version though, will I be able to upgrade my current windows ME system with it? Or do I still have to buy the upgrade seperately?

You are correct as far a staying legal according to the EndUserLicenseAgreement the we all accept and agree to but never really read. I had same situation whan I built a second PC for my Kids. I have WinME Oem Full version and according to the agrement if I bought XP upgrade version and used my copy of ME as a qualifier for the upgrade then I am not supposed to use that copy of WinME legally. I did as suggested and have XP Pro OEM full version on MYPC, and left that WinME on the kids PC, and gave MOM my XP home upgrade version, so she is legal to have it to upgrade her Win98....

I am not sure if I understand your question correctly, but since Windows XP needs to be activated, you now need one copy for every PC that you own. Thus, you would have to buy a copy for the new PC you are building, and another copy if you want to put Windows XP on the PC that currently has ME.

Yeah, thats basically what I was asking. So, I should just buy one upgrade, (for my comptuer running windows ME), and one OEM, (for my new computer)?

If I were doing it, I would get two OEM versions unless the upgrade version was less expensive. I wouldn't want to upgrade from ME to XP anyway, because upgrades generally cause more problems than fresh installs.
If you can get an upgrade versoin cheaper, though, then go ahead and do that. |
