Microsoft Word problem
my Granddaughter's boy friend is using a Gateway Computer (stats unknown, store bought) with Windows ME..About a month ago, he added Microsoft Word and used it for some English homework--now about a week ago the program will not load at all. when trying to open it says "winword has caused error in WINWORD.EXE and tells him to close the window if problem persists restart comp....still won't start. have tried uninstalling, reinstalling but don't think he completely uninstalled it. ran virus scan to be sure no virus, found nothing..tried system restore to earlier date, still nothing. You guys have any ideas or suggestions to help him out??

Provided he has put in nothing new to enhance Word (like a PDF writer etc etc), my guess would be that the default template file is corrupt. Do a search for .dot files (especially normal.dot) and delete them. Then start Word.

That's the first thing I do when Word causes grief - delete normal.dot. Next thing is pop the Office CD in and do a repair/reinstall.

I agree...do a search of the harddrive for "normal.dot" and delete it.
The reason a reinstall/repair of Word won't fix a corrupt normal.dot is that file isn't installed when Word (or Office) is intalled. It's created the first time you open Word. After deleting it, Word will just create a new one. |
