Security app
Anyone know of a good 3rd party app for preventing access to files, folders and computer settings for Win95/98?

I just use a BIOS password that prevents anyone from even booting up my PC.

I appreciate the reply Sarge, but the guy is needing to keep someone from changing the Network and other windows settings.

OK, from what I gather Win2k and XP are the onliest ones that can provide that. I have read of some software proggies that provide a measure of protection for us Win98 users but someone else will have to jump aboard and confirm that.

Yeah, I tried to talk him into upgrading to Win2k or XP, but money is an issue right now...maybe someone will come up with some software that will help somewhat.

The basic answer is that W9x systems can not be secured. You could add some system policies but they are easily defeated.

Wishful thinking I guess...I was just hoping someone knew of a good 3rd party program that could do it. He may have to figure a way to come up with the funds to upgrade.

How secure does it need to be? Can making the files read-only thwart possible hackers? Other than that, securing Win9X is pretty much next to impossible. A half-dedicated hacker can bypass any Win9X security. Better to use Windows XP/2K and NTFS, which has security built in.

Yeah doc....I know how unsecure 98 is...just wishing for a miracle, lol. What he is doing; is starting a small internet cafe setting in a video store and was needing something to keep people from messing with the settings. Upgrading to w2k or xp would be the answer, but he can't do it as of now.

take a look at DeepFreeze : " Deep Freeze Standard is Simple and Easy to Use: Install in Seconds. Works VERY well. cost $ though. andyms18a's reference site seems very helpful. remember to disable boot-disk booting, and protect BIOS with pass,and lock the physical servers with a lock.
