Norton Performance Issues

Okay, as in my last thread, which is just a bit down the page, I installed Norton Internet Security.

Now when I startup my machine rather then instantly loadin and being ready to go it takes 5 minutes from the time I see my desktop to the time its done.

Can I make this better without getting rid of norton? If not, any free alternatives that are as good as the norton firewall? And if it comes to that any special instructions on how to get rid of it?

The xp firewall is not a sufficent firewall. Keep norton or get rid of nortan and get zonealarm and avg for free off the net.

The XP firewall is fine if you are careful.

Norton AV is not the cause of the problem, as it was there before I installed IS without the AV component, so it has to be the norton firewall. ]

How do I enable the XP firewall?

hi,

Start>
go to control panel>
choose network and internet connections
>click network connections
>right-click icon, choose properties
click the advanced tab at top
>place tick in the box..protect my computer

click ok.

Should be sorted...

I use sygate and AVG, and never bump into any problems.
Firewall as above is always on..
Sygate shows me what files are trying to acces my pc, and allows me to choose.
I suppose all progs do nearly the same thing, just a matter of finding what one you feel comfortable with....
I find sygate is very easy to use and understand, and install on most PCs I set up for people.
sygate helped many of my mates spot the RPC bug straight away, and they choose not to accept the files, whilst they were still downloading microsft patches etc...
Good luck.

glc i am going to stand by my earlyer statment that XP's fire wall sucks hardcore. It doesn't stop out going it only stops incoming. Download Zone Alarm for free if you are not going to use the Norton Firewall

I agree with glc,

XP firewall does a sufficient job...if u are careful

I just like the graphical side of sygate, which actually asks me everytime something is gonna try and access my PC. Or if any progs from my PC are gonna try and access the net...

Ninja, a hardware router firewall is NO better than the XP firewall in that respect. You and others are making too much ado about the lack of blocking outgoing. As a matter of fact, the XP firewall uses stateful packet inspection, which only the better routers and very few software firewalls use.

Ok, I need some more help here...

When I go to control panel, I dont have a "Network & Internet Connections" icon. Is this because I am running XP in the mode that makes it look like old windows? Where do I find the XP firewall properties?

Thanks for your help, especially the link to that video.

I'm going to turf Norton now, are there any special uninstallation requirements for it, or will the add/remove programs feature do a good enough job getting rid of it?

hi,

glad 2 help...

I think un-install (add/remove) should do, but truthfully, I have always stayed away from Norton, so I cant really confirm the best way to get rid of it...also, im sure their will be some registry entries still, after un-install, so u can delete them if ya want , but thats slightly harder. I just posted about a prog called flash hunter, which i un-installed, yet was still an option in my internet xplorer options.
Once I deleted the entries in registry (Run>type regedit)
The link has gone, so now nothing exists of the software.

here is what I use, to give ya an idea of my set up

Sygate personal firewall(free)
Spy bot -Search and destroy (free & very good)
Spyware blaster (free, and very good)
AVG (free)
Adaware (free)

As soon as someone scans my PC, sygate informs me, and allows me to backtrace quickly.
Also, with the above installed, I have still yet to see a pop-up come and harass my desktop! B4, I used to get loads.

Spybot will pick up more files than adaware, but I got both installed.Type them names into google search, and you can read about them, and see if you want any..Oh yeah, ure virus and other progs are only as good as the updates they recieve. So make sure you check regularly for the updates. All the above have integrated update support.

good luck..

hhi,

just a quickie off topic..

the google tool bar, which is also free, helps block LOADS of popups...which Ive got.
If u intall it, striaght away, you'll see the difference, and it will tell you how many its blocked. Will also give ya the option of allowing them, with a single click to turn the function on and off..

When installing I choose to disable the send data to google, just to keep my searches a bit more private...

I must agree with the radioactivenija the XP firewall is pants.
In answer to your actual question jackal, NIS is a bit of a resouce hog but if you strip the startup of your system configuration utility and set your virtual memory to system manged size you should see an improvement. dont strip the firewall out of the startup in msconfig though.
