How do I stop these programs from automatically running

I fixing an HP Pavillion computer for a friend. The PC is very slow. I found that he had about 12 programs running on the bottom right tray. I looked at the startup folder and deleted all programs there. I also deleted some load command at the begiinning of win.ini. I went into the registry and didnt find any start up lines. Still these programs (Attune, KaZaa, Musicjuke box, Microsoft Works Portfolio, McAfee active shield, Dial up networking and others are still running automaitically and I couldnt find a way to stop them. How do I stop these programs? Also what else can I do to tune up his PC. Its WinMe on 128MB.

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
Run/msconfig/startup tab. Uncheck the items you want to stop

Thanks Panama Red. Will that disable the Yahoo Messenger too? I didnt want to un-install it but its such a nuisance having it run automatically.

Unselect the Yahoo messenger and then add an icon to the task bar for opening only when you want to. Also, most messenger programs like AIM and MS, have a setting in the preferences or options that say "Start when computer starts" find that and unselect it also.
