No, it's not pay as you go, you only pay for the songs you want to buy, there is no subscription to run out and disable you music, basically you buy it you own it.
You can search and listen to a 30 second 128bps preview of any of the 400,000 songs and you dont have to pay anything to browse and preview. The files are AAC (advanced audio coding) this is the audio layer of the mpeg4 format. They only play in itunes and an ipod so far. I don't know of a single other mp3 player that supports AAC. But you can burn them to as many CD's as you like, and if you are so inclined, could re-encode them as MP3 files for use on other MP3 players. You can also set up an itunes allowance for the kids and send itunes gift certificates.

thanks, that answers my question. is it possible to download in mp3, or is it only aac? doesn't particularly matter, but could i then add mp3's to an cd with aac's on it. i have already ripped the other songs he wants off of his cd's in mp3 and need to add like 4 songs he does not have, hence itunes

the iTunes mucis store is only AAC, the itunse player uses both formats (AAC and MP3), if you add all the songs to your library and tell itunes to burn a regular music CD it'll be fine. If you plan on burning an MP3 data CD the AAC files will not work, but im assuming your grandfather want to play these in a regular CD player, so a normal music CD will be fine.
