Startup error-- HELP

hey, im have an old IBM computer running on windows 98. When i go to start it up it comes up with the BIOS background and it says:

"Post Start Up Error(s)
The following error(s) were detected when your system was started:

1762 Configuration change has occured
162 Configuration change has occured"

then it goes on for me to go into BIOS and what not. if i exit bios it goes to a blank black screen and nothing happens. When i go into BIOS i have no idea what to do. i tryed changing around alot of settings and testing out what works and what doesnt work but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

Okay, look at the back of your machine and find the 4 character Machine Type number and 3 character Model number. It could also be just a string of 7 numbers and letters.

First, I would just try going into the BIOS and hit the "exit and save" option.

Have you performed any recent upgrades or configuration changes? Do you have a surge protector and has there been any power outages/brownouts/surges while the computer was on?
