Have you taken a look at Ulead's Media Studio Pro?? It is often ranked higher than Adobe's Premier, but is almost as expensive but not quite. But that's just for editing.

If you looking for "authoring" programs, I haven't really found one I like either...

Wow...I'd like to see where MSP ranks higher than Premiere...or any prosumer package.

VideoStudio is supposed to be limiting - it's consumer level. Sony's ScreenBlast Movie Studio 3.0 (formerly SonicFoundry's VideoFactory) is pretty decent at that level. For something more powerful (but of course more expensive) look at Adobe's Premiere Pro. It's as powerful as any professional editor, but 1/3 the cost. And Premiere Pro makes Media Studio Pro look like a toy. And I'm not saying that because I've got something against MSP, I dont. But the difference between Premiere 6.5 and Premiere Pro is like the difference between a Ford Festiva and a Corvette.

If you don't need a lot of power or you want something simple the Arcsoft's Showbiz DVD is pretty good, cheap, and simple.

I didn't mention "Pro" and was thinking of 6.x. I also wasn't refering to a "pro" level editor. I was refering to "bang-for-the-buck" as MSP does have more "features" than Premier according to the reviews I've read where both are included. And, again from what I've read, to get Premier to do what Movie Studio Pro does, you need to spend hundred more for addons and plugins.

I'm just a home-movie novice and know only two people with Premier and when they looked at MSP on my machine, they were sorry the got Premire. Maybe a at higher level, such as youself, you notice only 'pro' type stuff but MSP sure fits the bill for me and was a more affordable.

It's not meant to be. You can look at it this way: the more powerful the program (the more it can do), the more difficult it is to use.

Premiere Pro is a program that really is on the edge of being a professional editor (in most respects, it is). So of course it's difficult to use - if it were easy to use, anyone could become a professional with little or no real training.

We'd have a country full of Peter Jacksons.

Pinnacle Commotion, Adobe After Effects, Canopus Xplode, Discreet Combustion, Boris FX or Boris Red...that's a good start.

How much does Premiere Pro cost? I'm curious since you say it's so much better than Premiere 6.5-- which I've found to be pretty powerful in itself. TIA.

List price, I believe, is $700 USD. You could probably find it cheaper shopping around, or even get a student discount somewhere...

(PS: Also, and SonicVanguard can correct me if needed, but I think the "Pro" part is a fancy way of saying Version 7. I don't think they are calling it just "Premiere" now.)

I'm about to order the premier pro upgrade. $198 is the best price i have found. I'm assuming there won't be any problems using a 6.5 project with pro?.

To answer your original question, if you're looking for a cheap option try the free version of Avid DV, doesn't get any cheaper than free.

The "Pro" part of Premiere Pro does not really indicate a version 7. It indicates a move in a new direction - Premiere will only work on Windows 2000Pro and WindowsXPPro. They are no longer doing builds for any Mac OS.

Premiere Pro is also a total re-code of their software (according to the Adobe guys I met at a conference a few months ago). It's not an upgrade persay - it's a new piece of software intended to compete dorectly with Final Cut Pro and Avid XpressDV Pro.

Are you seeing the trend yet...>? And yes...list is around $700, upgrades are around $200 and student costs are variable depending on the school. I checked over at MSU during the above conference and student cost ranged from $350 to $650 depending on the bookstore. There are some fabulous (well...maybe I should say were...) on-line sources for students to get software. I used them all the time when I got my masters at U/M. Unfortunatly, I cannot for the life of me remember any of the links.

Works flawlessly. But we found ourselves redoing quite a bit only because of the nestable timelines and other fun little toys in Premiere Pro.

No problem. And right back at you - but you need to clean out your PM box first.
