nutz.
i just loaded goback latest ver 3.21 which is good for xp but when i put my emachine [3 mo. old] into standby, it goes down but the monitor won't come back up. even though the pc is back on, can't see a damn thing so i can't tell whats going wrong. i removed goback and all is well. nothing i could find except for the 3.21 update for xp which i downloaded and ran. i suppose next i will email emachines to see if they have any fixes for this software problem that is odd only to them. it must be a boot sector problem that interferes with the space that standby is saved in or?? |

Well it's not really a boot sector problem, considering the pc has already booted. But i don't really know the reliability of an eMachine. Definately call them and find out what can be done.

It's for Windows ME, but it may be a similar problem in XP. I have heard that GoBack can cause problems. I know that using the standby feature can. Combining the two may just be asking for trouble. |

i thought that standby wrote instructions in the boot sector to bypass normal full bootup.
kind of like goback does to access the program before windows loads. i don't think this is a hdwe issue and i have emailed goback with the problem and provided them with awnsers to several questions. i'm waiting to see what they come up with since it's their software that i'm having problems with. |

Well the boot sector is to see what partition to boot AFTER POST. Standby mode is your OS having the ability to power down all devices like they are off, but in reality your computer is still on and doesn't have to go through POST again, therefore it doesn't have to go through the boot sector again. I've never had luck or efficient operation after using standby on a 98/ME machine. Never tried it for XP though. Gonzo is right, GoBack and standby together can't be too good for the computer.

my info might be suspect as i read that in standby, windows copies necessary files to a place on hdd to bypass needing to load from scratch when pc is restarted.
i notice that this mode even bypasses the post on startup hence the pc maybe in minimal power mode [although it appears to turn off completely] symantec awnsered with no idea how to remedy the problem. i'll have to consider whether i want to shutdown all the time to be able to have goback. [i't's saved my butt many times] |

since goback stores it's own compressed copies of EVERYTHING [unlike xp restore] and it's actions are independent of xp, i don't see any problems.
i have read where some users were not fully satisfied with the restore feature. [but i do like the ability to pick a current configuration and be able to return to it a month later if new software doesn't perform, something goback can't yet do.]
