problem with word 2000

hello,(win98se,office 2000,word 2000)
i have a problem with word 2000, that when i open any word document from "my documents" folder and go to file-print, i get a flashing title bar and the system locks up, until i click on word help or ctrl alt delete.the only error message i have seen is from office assistant saying "there is a dialog in progress so it cannot close word".
its like my documents and word are not communicating correctly about the print option.
however, when i go directly to word and "open" a document and File-print, it works ok.
also, if you click the print icon in any of the latter, it prints immediately without fault although you get no options ,just the printed doc, which is ok but not ideal in some situations.
has anyone come across this problem and solved it?
also, i have not installed any service packs for office 2000, as i am waiting for my Broadband to arrive soon.
i have also tried the detect and repair program ,which didn't work and have removed and reinstalled word 2000 already.

if you want to get printer choices for ink, paper settings etc, i always use the file button at top left next to edit to open menu and choose print from the list. then i always get the printer properties so i can change settings if need be.

using the printer icon never gives me the choices i need.

Funny...I have experienced that when trying to print or even trying to save a document for the first time. When it happens the document flashed uncontrollably on the taskbar. I used to hit CRT, ALT, DLT but then I found out that if I double clicked the doucment on the taskbar it would stop and then I was able to print or save as usual. It happend like five times total in like 6 months and I never figured it out. I have been running SP3 for Office 2000 for like 3 months hoping it would fix the issue and it has not returned. I don't know if they addressed that issue or not but it couldn't hurt to try. Geeze, and I thought I was going crazy when it happend to me!

yeah, i wonder if my dreaded brother has unclicked or clicked a box in options.
something i have found is, when i go to tools-options-print and try to tick the "draft output" box , it never stays ticked after i exit and come back to it.strange.
looks like i'll DL service packs then.
