McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.0 Error 1402
Hello All,
I am trying to install McAfee VirusScan and am getting the following error: Error 1402.Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Network Associates\TVD\Shared Components\McUpdate. System error 5. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel. I have uninstalled all other virus programs. I am installing under an Administrator account and have also tried installing under the XP Pro built-in administrator account. Any suggestions on what may be causing this? Thanks, AG |

According to McAfee's support site, that error is only supposed to show up in Win98/Me installations, and has to do with UserProfiles and the Windows Installer.
Here's their article for that error: _________________________ Error 1402. Could not open key 'Error 1402. Could not open key: . System error 1009. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.' This issue is discussed at length on Microsoft's support site. On the support site the issue refers to Microsoft Office however, it applies to any application using the Windows Installer to install. Our programs use the Windows Installer, so the solution present also resolves the same issue for McAfee customers. Please visit the following article for the solution: http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;302853& ____________________________ Might be that the uninstall of the other antivirus software didn't go well - you could check the website of the previous software you used, and look for an Uninstall or "clean" tool, that will help remove any leftovers that are giving the McAffee install a hard time. If that doesn't work, see if there's a newer version Windows Installer either on Windows Update, or the general download site - might go better with a more recent version. [might be one of those things that get fixed in a Service Pack ] You can also take a look in the Event Logs under Administrative Tools in XP - check the Application Logs and the System Logs for details on the error - might yield a worthwhile clue. ---I'm mostly in Win2k & Win98 here at the lab, so perhaps some McAffee WinXP users will come along with their suggestions . . . Gary,
Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately none of them helped. As for the event log, the only information it had was the error. There was no extra information on what may be the cause of the error. AG |

Did you try the User Profiles angle at all? You might have some luck there, if no clean tools or newer versions of Windows Installer helped. [You might be able to temporarily disable other User Profiles long enough to get it installed, then re-enable the other profiles... since it seems to be something 'locking" that 'key'...(not sure why Administrator wouldn't have root priviledges there... )]

Gary,
I did try the user profile tips listed on the Microsoft link, but I got the same error. I also manually cleaned all installed components for my previous program, Norton AntiVirus. Thanks, AG |

Did you follow the instructions for manual install on the Symantec site for your version? It would follow something like this one, used for Norton 2002 AV from WinXP Pro: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...e=&svy=&csm=no
Did you have several Norton's - or any others before the latest Norton? I'm still thinking that it's a leftover sort of thing. . . . Gary Last edited by GaryRouth; 01-11-2004 at 12:38 AM. |

I did follow the instrutctions in the link you provided for Norton 2002, which was the only Symantec product I had installed and the only version of Norton I had on this pc. Still no luck.
I think I am just going to give up for now. I have installed AVG, a free antivirus program, that seems to work just fine. I may eventually just reinstall XP, which should clean up everything. Thanks for all the help. AG |
