You can make a bootdisk and stick F-Prot for DOS on it. However, I don't think you will be able to access any NTFS drives.

You can follow this procedure, which requires three floppy disks.

What have you tried? As I said before, you won't be able to access any NTFS volumes using this approach.

It won't on anything but FAT, and won't work properly on NT systems as stated in their online support

"Please note that there is a problem with running a DOS antivirus scanner on Windows NT 4.0 / 2000 / 2003 / XP systems. It is not guaranteed that all files will be scanned. The reason for this has mainly to do with long filenames and non-ASCII characters in file names. DOS only "understands" 8 character long filenames.

Therefore use F-Prot Antivirus for Windows to scan Windows NT 4.0 / 2000 / 2003 / XP systems."

Can you start in Safe Mode? Last Known Good Configuration? When you say you tried the repair from the Windows XP CD, what do you mean? The repair console? A repair install?

Run it from "command" mode. I know in Win98 I start the pc with a boot disk and at the A prompt, insert disk 1 of the f-prot and type f-prot /loaddef

Try putting the drive in another computer and formatting it, then install it back into the computer and see if it will install.

I would zero the drive out then repartition and format.

How exactly are you trying to format your disk? Note that you cannot format any drive that has NTFS loaded on it with a bootdisk that contains an OS that is Windows 95/98/DOS/PC-DOS etc etc.

To format a drive, the operating system has to understand the type of partition that is created on the drive. As far as the older OS' go, they will not understand partitions created by XP.

If you are trying to retrieve your data, and a correctly used repair installation (Let me stress correctly, because you were sketchy on the details of what you did) does not work, then put in the new hard drive you were mentioning, do a fresh install of Windows XP to the new hard drive (let your original drive be a secondary drive); INSTALL a good, updated antivirus to the new installation of XP. Then copy your data from the original drive out, and do a thorough scan.

If you are done trying to recover your data and you just want to start afresh, just boot with your XP CD, and then start afresh - making sure that you DELETE all existing partitions and then recreate it.

You see in order for us to help you (and believe us, that every person who has viewed this thread has done so with an intent to help you), you have to help us. Without adequate information we are all just trying to play 20 questions. Start with telling us, the original setup of your XP (your filesystem - it of course sounds like NTFS), and why you suspect a virus. What were the symptoms? What tools are you using to do the stuff that you said you are doing .. like format the drive for example. There are a gazillion ways of formatting the drive, but only some that will work .. it doesnt take too much time to tell us "well i guess this hard drive is junk I tried using this tool to format the drive it won't even let me reformat it ?....anyone have any other ideas?"
I am not trying to flame you, am just trying to get you help faster and get your system running as it was.

ok it has winxp pro( yes it is NTFS) on it and when it all started it was setting there running and the screen saver was on then i look again and the screen was black i shook the mouse and hit a key on the key board and nothing happend...so i killed the power to it and when it tryed to reboot it went to the screen where it say normal boot , safe mode or set to last configution and i tryed all 3 and it flashed the blue screen and restarted. then the next time it booted
the xp start screen came on for a second then flashed a blue screen and then restarted and that is all it would do.....so i got out my xp cd and reset the bios to boot from cdrom put the cd in and when it boot to the cd i try using the repair xp and the blue screen flashed and it restarted so i tryed to put a fresh install on it and the same thing( flash blue screen then restart) tryed it 5 or 6 times still nothing so i have put in the other hard drive and it took the install just fine and i'm getting the up dates for xp off the web and i have AVG PRO on a disk and going to install it and put the old drive in and try to get the data off it...the reason i think it is a virus or a worm because i ran a the diagnostic tool for the hard drive from floppy and it passed every test...i do thank all who have responded to this thread and all of everybodys help and i'm sorry for not being very detailed in the begining...and if anyone one would have an idea of the cause it would be nice to know...i'll let everyone know what i find on it if anything.....thanks to all!!!!!!!!!
