Do you want to burn a CD or save files to a flash card?

If you are looking to burn an Audio CD, which I would assume is what you want based on your wording, you first need burning software like Nero or Easy CD Creator, etc.. I don't think that you need to convert the filetypes at all, just burn it is a music CD, and you should be good to go.

If you're burning, the burning software does all the converting for you.

Just use Windows Media Player 9. It will convert and burn for you.

MusicMatch can do it. Just convert to WAV.

There is no need to convert to anything. Using EZ-CD Creator or Nero, just select that you want to create a audio CD and select your files. Thats it...nothing else needs to be done.

By converting to WAV, you may introduce digital artifacts and other not so nice errors that result from going from a compressed format (mp3) back to a bit for bit format (WAV). Just let your buring program do the job.

In order for music to play in an ordinary CD player (as opposed to an MP3 player), the music must be in the "red book standard" which is essentially just another format.

It makes no difference what format the music files are in before they're burned to an audio CD, they must be converted to red book standard to be playable in a CD player.

As has already been pointed out, Both Easy CD Creator and Nero do the conversion automatically when "audio CD" is selected.

Since MP3 format is compressed, converting to wav format sort of "decompresses" it, almost always making changes, as SonicVanguard said, that degrade the quality.

Windows Media Player 9 is free and works great. Why is it always ignored?

Because it does not burn red book compliant CDs and never has. Sure, most CD's burned with WMP9 will play in most CD players...bt some will not.

I didn't know that. I have never burned a CD that didn't play.
