question about spyware
does spyware or any other advertising programs slow your comp down?

Yes... it can slow you down a lot... it can also congest your network connection to the point where you can't access the net anymore.

I went over to a co-worker house to speed up his computer and ended up spending 3 hours taking out spyware off his computer. By the end I felt like banging my head against a wall, yeap spyware definitely can slow you computer down. An one piece of advice, don't download any other toolbar except Google's for that is where most of his spyware came from.
