As a beginner, you'll probably want to try Madrale out, it's very user friendly. It's what I'm using to get familiarized before I start on the harder stuff.
Just a warning though: it' 3 CDs big, so you better have broadband. Also, you may want to use Bittorrent to download it with, as it will be faster. You can find a link to the Bittorrent files here Dogwelder |

The folks over at Extreme Tech have reviews and roundups of dozens of Linux distros, most of the recent ones can be found on this webpage: http://www.extremetech.com/category2/0,3971,378,00.asp
I've used Caldera, and RedHat, since the 6.0 days, but have also seen some very nice Mandrake and SuSe boxes. So far, I haven't seen one that I didn't like. They are all pretty capable. . . . Gary |

Mandrake is a nice place to start... Red Hat is slightly harder (and I mean very slightly) to setup, but another good choice.

if you downloaded all 3 cd's it should install ok, do the md5 test and check the matching numbers of the iso file before you burn the cd's
I had to download twice before I got it correct, and it worked fine |

Redhat is fairly easy to use for newer Linux users.

For a true noob, Mandrake will do a fine job of handholding. It does not have as many installed apps as RedHat, but the latter can be quite intimidating, as it requires the command line for full control, whereas Mandrake does not.
